India Post has dismissed rumours about the discontinuation of its Registered Post service, clarifying that it has instead merged it with Speed Post for faster, more efficient deliveries, without compromising on trust or security

New Delhi: The Department of Posts has issued a firm clarification amid widespread rumours, confirming that the 'Registered Post' service is not being discontinued. Instead, in a significant operational upgrade, India Post has merged Registered Post with Speed Post to streamline mail handling, enhance delivery timelines, and boost logistical efficiency.
Taking to the social media platform X, India Post posted: “Fact Check: Registered Post is not being discontinued. India Post has upgraded the service by merging it with Speed Post.”
In an official press release, the Ministry of Communications explained that this integration is part of an overall strategy to rationalise sorting infrastructure and unify the processing of Registered and Speed Post items. The move is expected to improve backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and enhance nationwide connectivity.
What Changes for Customers?
Though the backend operations are unified, India Post will retain key features of Registered Post, including:
- Addressee-specific delivery (handed over only to the recipient or an authorised representative)
- Delivery receipts and acknowledgements
- End-to-end real-time tracking
The merger brings several Speed Post benefits to Registered Post users, such as:
- Faster delivery
- OTP-based secure delivery
- Real-time updates
- Cash on Delivery (COD)
- Credit facilities
- Volume-based discounts
National Account Facility for corporate clients
“Now, send ‘Registered Post’ with the speed of ‘Speed Post’: no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes,” India Post said in its communication.

Both Registered and Speed Post services are considered ‘accountable services’, with detailed records maintained at every stage to ensure transparency and traceability. The operational shift is designed to modernise the postal network without compromising on trust, security, or reliability.
Customers can now opt for the enhanced ‘Speed Post with registration’ option for faster, secure, and recipient-specific delivery, marking a significant upgrade in India’s postal services.
