Subscribers of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) will soon be able to withdraw their EPF savings directly into their bank accounts through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), according to a source. The new dedicated mobile application is expected to be launched in April this year.

The Labour Ministry is working on a system under which a certain portion of the EPF corpus will remain frozen, while a substantial part will be made available for withdrawal through linked bank accounts using the UPI payment gateway.

Through the new app, members will be able to check their eligible EPF balance available for transfer to their seeded bank accounts. They can then authorise the transaction using their linked UPI PIN, enabling a secure and direct transfer of funds. The application will also provide other services such as viewing passbook balances.

Currently, EPFO members access their accounts through the Universal Account Number (UAN) portal or the UMANG app. These platforms will continue to offer services, while the new app is aimed at improving accessibility and streamlining service delivery.

At present, members must file withdrawal claims to access their EPF savings. Under the auto-settlement system, claims are processed electronically within three days without manual intervention. The limit for auto-settlement has been increased to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 1 lakh, allowing quicker access to funds for purposes such as illness, education, marriage and housing.

EPFO, which has around eight crore members, introduced online auto-settlement of advance claims during the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate faster financial assistance. However, members still need to submit claims to withdraw funds.

The new system is being developed to reduce this time-consuming process and ease the administrative burden on EPFO, which settles over five crore claims annually, mostly related to EPF withdrawals. Trials are currently being conducted using 100 dummy accounts to address technical issues and improve system efficiency.

According to the source, EPFO cannot permit direct withdrawals from EPF accounts as it does not hold a banking licence. The move is intended to modernise services and bring them closer to banking standards, with an official rollout expected in April.
