Jammu: Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district have arrested four individuals following an alleged assault on a tourist in the Bhaderwah area, officials said on Sunday, adding that prompt action was taken to prevent any escalation.

According to officials, the case came to light after a written complaint was submitted at Police Station Bhaderwah by Suresh Kumar, a resident of Nagni Bhalra. The complaint detailed an incident on Friday in which a tourist was allegedly attacked in the locality.

Acting on the complaint, police initiated preventive proceedings under provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), aimed at maintaining public order and averting any further disturbance. During the course of the action, four residents of Bhaderwah, identified as Javed Iqbal, Owais Ahmed, Khursheed Ahmed and Avinash Manhas, were detained.

Officials confirmed that all four accused were subsequently produced before the Executive Magistrate in Bhaderwah for further legal proceedings as mandated by law. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.

Reiterating their stance on tourist safety, police said they remain committed to ensuring that visitors to the region are protected and that any attempt to disrupt peace or harmony will invite strict legal action. Authorities stressed that maintaining a secure and tourist-friendly environment remains a priority for the district administration.

Tourism continues to be a key economic pillar for Jammu and Kashmir, second only to horticulture. The Union Territory has recorded strong visitor numbers in recent years, with officials highlighting that tourist footfall has remained steady despite isolated incidents.

Security agencies have repeatedly underscored their intent to respond swiftly to any law-and-order issue that could impact public confidence or the safety of travellers.

The latest action in Doda, officials said, reflects a preventive approach designed to contain tensions at an early stage and reassure visitors planning trips to the region.

Further details regarding the victim’s condition and the sequence of events leading to the alleged assault are expected as the probe progresses.
