Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has cancelled his official trip to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF), originally scheduled from January 18, an official statement confirmed.

A record 400 senior political leaders from around the world, including a significant contingent from Latin America, are set to participate in the 56th WEF Annual Meeting, which will take place in Davos from January 19 to 23, 2026.

Under the theme “A Spirit of Dialogue”, the forum aims to provide a neutral platform for government, business and civil society leaders to rebuild trust and explore solutions to challenges that transcend national borders. This could prove pivotal considering heightened geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty and rapid technological change.

According to the release, Shivakumar’s cancellation is due to pressing official engagements in New Delhi and Bengaluru. The Deputy Chief Minister is scheduled to hold meetings with All India Congress Committee (AICC) functionaries regarding the upcoming Assam Assembly elections and is also spearheading a campaign against the Centre over MNREGA.

These responsibilities coincide with a five-day special session of the Karnataka Assembly beginning January 22.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara clarified that Shivakumar’s visit to Delhi is entirely organisational and focused on election-related discussions.

Further, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that DK Shivakumar had travelled to the national capital at the direction of the AICC president and has been assigned duties concerning the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Shivakumar met senior Congress leaders in Delhi, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday.

After the Karnataka Congress government reached the halfway mark of its five-year term on November 20 last year, there has been much speculation about a change in the state's Chief Minister. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara seen as key figures in the ongoing power struggle within the party.

On Saturday, Shivakumar also paid tribute to veteran Congress leader and freedom fighter Bheemanna Khandre, describing him as a towering personality who contributed loyally to the party and played a key role in the development of Bidar.
