Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently presented data in the state legislature addressing the underlying reasons behind individuals leaving their homes. According to reports by The Indian Express, Fadnavis stated that romantic relationships are the primary factor for women leaving home, whereas domestic issues drive most men to take the same step.

Breakdown of Statistics

Presenting statistics covering the period from 2021 to 2026, Fadnavis detailed that 46.32 per cent of women left their homes due to romantic relationships, while 20 per cent left over family problems and two per cent due to mental stress.

In contrast, the trends for men showed that 32 per cent left their households owing to domestic issues, with only 9.12 per cent leaving due to romantic reasons.

Addressing concerns over missing persons and child disappearances previously raised by political parties such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Fadnavis noted that actual abductions accounted for a very small fraction of the total cases. For women, only 5.25 per cent of missing cases involved genuine abduction, with the remaining individuals having voluntarily left home.

Overall Figures and Conviction Rates

Data shared during the session highlighted that between 2021 and 2026, a total of 2,34,811 women and 2,17,758 men were reported missing, out of whom 93 per cent eventually returned home.

Shifting focus to the state's judicial performance, Fadnavis reported that Maharashtra's conviction rate stood at 52.6 per cent as of May 2026, marking an increase from 44.2 per cent the previous year. He attributed ongoing improvements to the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), noting that the government aims to push the conviction rate up to 70 per cent.
