New Delhi: The Centre is likely to convene a special three-day session of Parliament later this month to take up the proposed Delimitation Bill and the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill, sources said on Wednesday, as the government stepped up efforts to break the ongoing impasse with the Opposition.

According to sources, the government has informed the Congress that it intends to hold the special session on August 16, 17 and 18. The Congress is learnt to have said it would communicate its decision after consulting within the party and with other Opposition parties.

The development comes amid renewed engagement between the government and the Opposition over the proposed Delimitation Bill.

Earlier in the day, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at his Parliament office for around 50 minutes. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also attended the meeting.

Congress sources said Rijiju sought the party's views on the Delimitation Bill, while the two sides also discussed ways to end the continuing parliamentary deadlock.

The meeting was seen as an attempt to revive dialogue after repeated disruptions in both Houses during the Monsoon Session.

The Opposition has been demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah make statements in Parliament on issues raised by Opposition members. Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the demand on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm after Opposition protests disrupted proceedings.

Earlier, Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, marched from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar within the Parliament complex. They protested against the alleged police action on Citizens for Justice and Peace demonstrators on July 20, while also raising concerns over the handling of donations collected for the Ayodhya Ram temple and other public issues.

As the Opposition staged its protest, Prime Minister Modi hosted 37 BJP MPs for breakfast at his residence as part of his interactions with parliamentarians during the Monsoon Session.
