New Delhi: In a unique initiative to enhance passenger convenience and generate additional revenue, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is planning to transform old buses into air-conditioned canteens near major bus terminals across the city.

This innovative move comes as part of a broader strategy to repurpose decommissioned buses while addressing the long-standing lack of food facilities at Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) and DTC terminals.

First AC bus canteen ready at Kashmiri Gate ISBT

A prototype canteen has already been set up using an old bus at Kashmiri Gate ISBT, giving commuters a glimpse of what the planned facilities will look like. The refurbished bus has been equipped with air conditioning and redesigned interiors to resemble a small restaurant.

The Delhi government sees dual benefits in this project, providing clean, affordable food options for passengers and creating a new revenue stream for the loss-making DTC. According to officials, tenders have been issued for operating these canteens through private vendors, who will be required to maintain hygiene and offer budget-friendly meals.

No food facilities inside ISBTs after hygiene concerns

Currently, there are no official food or beverage outlets operated by the DTC or the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) at ISBTs or bus depots. Earlier, food stalls at Kashmiri Gate ISBT were removed following a directive by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, who flagged unsanitary conditions during a surprise inspection.

The removal of these stalls created a gap in commuter services, prompting authorities to explore safer, cleaner alternatives.

Plans to expand canteen buses across all depots and terminals

Delhi currently has: 3 Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs), 24 Bus Terminals, 37 Bus Depots. If the pilot project at Kashmiri Gate proves successful, DTC plans to expand these AC bus canteens to other locations across Delhi. The ultimate goal is to offer passengers access to quality meals at low prices while ensuring public spaces remain clean and well-managed.
