New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has suspended district judge Veena Rani, who was serving as a commercial court judge, following a vigilance inquiry ordered by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya. The suspension was approved during a full court meeting held on July 10, making it the second suspension of a district judge by the High Court within a short period.

According to a resolution issued by Registrar General Arun Bhardwaj on July 15, disciplinary proceedings against Veena Rani are under contemplation. The order states that she has been placed under immediate suspension under the applicable service and judicial rules governing members of the Delhi Higher Judicial Service.

The High Court also directed that during her suspension, Veena Rani's headquarters will remain the office of the Principal District and Sessions Judge, South East District, Saket Courts. She has also been barred from leaving Delhi without obtaining prior permission from the competent authority.

The reasons behind the vigilance inquiry or the allegations leading to the disciplinary action have not been made public. However, the suspension follows a recent decision by the High Court to suspend district judge Vinay Singhal over allegations related to the appointment of ineligible court auctioneers and irregular payments.

The latest action reflects the Delhi High Court's continued exercise of disciplinary oversight over members of the subordinate judiciary. In recent years, the court has initiated similar proceedings against judicial officers following vigilance inquiries into allegations of misconduct.
