The Delhi government has approved free bus travel for transgender passengers, extending its public transport inclusion policy.

New Delhi: The Government of Delhi has approved a proposal to include transgender passengers in its free bus travel scheme, expanding the initiative aimed at improving access to public transport for marginalised communities.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, according to an official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office on Monday.
Officials said the move reflects the government’s push to strengthen inclusive public transport policies in Delhi by ensuring equal access to mobility for all sections of society.
“This important initiative reflects the government’s commitment to social inclusion, dignity and equal access to public services for every citizen,” the statement said.
Free bus travel for transgender passengers
The new policy aims to enable members of the transgender community in Delhi to travel safely and conveniently across the city without facing financial barriers.
According to officials, the scheme will be implemented using the same mechanism currently used for the free bus travel facility available to women passengers on Delhi’s public transport buses.
Chief Minister Gupta said the government remains committed to building a more inclusive and equitable city.
“Our government is dedicated to creating a compassionate Delhi where every citizen can access opportunities and public services with dignity,” she said.
Pink ticket scheme for women to continue
The Chief Minister also confirmed that the free travel scheme for women in Delhi buses through the pink ticket system will continue for the next three months, urging commuters not to rush to obtain the proposed ‘Pink Saheli’ cards.
Earlier this month, President Droupadi Murmu launched the Pink National Common Mobility Card, which is designed to facilitate easier access to public transport services.
