New Delhi [India]: The Delhi High Court has transferred the investigation into the deaths of three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This move comes in response to the serious nature of the incidents and potential corruption involving public servants.
The Court has also instructed the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to appoint a senior officer to supervise the CBI's investigation.
Protests outside coaching institutes in Delhi's Rajinder Nagar continued for a sixth day on Friday. The demonstrations began on July 27, following the deaths of the aspirants in a flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre. The dead are Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalvin. Among them, Dalvin is from Kerala.
In a related development, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced on Thursday that four libraries will be established in honour of the deceased aspirants. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is expected to set up these libraries in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai.
Earlier, on Thursday, Delhi's Tis Hazari court granted bail to Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver accused of causing the deaths at the coaching centre. Kathuria is alleged to have driven recklessly, resulting in water entering the basement.
Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Kumar-IV approved bail for Kathuria, requiring a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount. However, the bail bond could not be processed as the judicial magistrate had concluded duties by the time the order reached the defence counsel.
The Judge observed that, based on the records, the charge against Kathuria under Section 105 of the BNS Act, which is non-bailable, appeared to be a consequence of over-enthusiasm.
