New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will on Friday flag off 200 new electric buses and launch the Delhi–Rohtak interstate e-bus service, marking a major push towards sustainable public transport in the national capital.

The induction of new e-buses into the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet is aimed at strengthening green mobility, reducing emissions and modernising Delhi’s transport infrastructure, according to an official statement.

Major boost to Delhi electric bus fleet

With the addition of 200 electric buses, Delhi’s total public transport fleet will reach around 6,300 buses, including:

  • 4,538 electric buses
  • 1,759 CNG buses

Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said that since the new government took office, over 2,184 electric buses have already been inducted into DTC operations.

“Delhi is rapidly transitioning towards a clean, efficient and future-ready public transport system,” Singh said, highlighting the government’s focus on eco-friendly urban mobility.

Delhi currently holds the distinction of having the largest electric bus fleet in India, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable transport initiatives.

Delhi–Rohtak electric bus service launched

Expanding green regional connectivity, the Delhi government will also roll out a new interstate electric bus service connecting Delhi and Rohtak.

The Delhi–Rohtak e-bus route will operate via key corridors, including:

  • ISBT Kashmere Gate
  • Peeragarhi Chowk
  • Tikri Border
  • Bahadurgarh
  • Rohad
  • Sampla
  • Rohtak Bus Stand

The service will run under the Combined Reciprocal Common Transport Agreement involving Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, initially on an experimental basis.

This adds to existing interstate electric routes linking Delhi with Sonipat, Panipat, Dharuhera, Baraut and Ghaziabad.

New bus infrastructure projects inaugurated

As part of the transport upgrade, CM Rekha Gupta will also inaugurate:

  • A new bus terminal at Madanpur Khadar
  • A modern administrative building at East Vinod Nagar Depot

These projects are expected to improve operational efficiency and commuter experience across the capital.

Target: 14,000 buses by 2028–29

The Delhi government has outlined an ambitious fleet expansion plan, targeting nearly 14,000 buses by the financial year 2028–29, with a strong emphasis on electric mobility.

Officials said the structured, time-bound programme aims to build a modern, accessible and environmentally responsible transport ecosystem.

Focus on sustainable urban mobility

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to sustainable mobility and improved commuter experience,” Singh said, adding that the government is accelerating efforts to create a cleaner and more efficient public transport network.

The latest rollout underscores the Rekha Gupta-led government’s push towards a commuter-centric, low-emission and future-ready urban transport system.
