In an extraordinary display of courage, a 50-year-old woman fought off a leopard with a wooden log to save her eight-year-old grandson and pet dog in Darjeeling's Bhutia Busty, located close to the popular Mall area.

The terrifying incident took place on Tuesday evening near the forested stretch adjoining the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary.

The woman, identified as Devika Sherpa, was seriously injured in the attack and was rushed to Darjeeling District Hospital the same night. She suffered a fractured arm, head injuries, and deep bite wounds.

According to locals, Sherpa had stepped outside after hearing her pet dog barking continuously. Her grandson followed her. Moments later, a leopard emerged from the darkness and attacked the dog.

Without hesitation, she grabbed a nearby piece of firewood and charged at the leopard. The animal then turned on her, attacking her instead.

Even as her frightened grandson clung to her, she continued striking the leopard until it finally retreated into the nearby forest.

Residents rushed to the spot after hearing her screams and arranged for her treatment. Speaking from the hospital, Sherpa said her only thought during the attack was to save her grandson.

The area, located close to the forest boundary, frequently witnesses the movement of wild animals, including leopards and Himalayan black bears, particularly after dusk.

Following the incident, the Forest Department has intensified surveillance, while residents have demanded that the leopard be captured to prevent further attacks.
