The 24th Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] Party Congress commenced on Wednesday in Madurai, with the party sharpening its attack on the Modi government’s domestic and foreign policies. Former general secretary and interim coordinator Prakash Karat accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of bowing to US imperialism, claiming that his administration was “surrendering India’s vital interests” to American influence, particularly under the Trump administration. He also criticised Modi’s “shameful betrayal” of the Palestinian cause, asserting that India was failing to stand against what he described as genocide by the Zionist regime.
Karat, in his address, underscored the growing struggles for livelihood and rights in India, stressing that the Left must provide political direction. He accused the BJP-led central government of systematically curbing Parliament, weakening judicial independence, and attacking federalism. He further alleged that non-BJP state governments were being deliberately deprived of funds while “Manuwadi values” were being imposed on society.
Senior leader Biman Bose led the ceremonial hoisting of the red flag, marking the beginning of the five-day event. The Party Congress, being held in Madurai for the third time, will deliberate on strengthening CPI(M)’s independent role in national politics. The defence of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, which Karat claimed was under attack from the BJP, will also be a key focus. The venue has been adorned with red flags, and torch rallies from various districts have heightened anticipation for what is expected to be a crucial gathering for the party.
