Calling it a "mindless act" and "shocking breach of decorum," the party stated it reflects how "hate and fanaticism have engulfed society."

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday condemned the shameful attack on Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, calling it a mindless act that exposes how hate and fanaticism have engulfed society. The opposition party described the incident as a shocking breach of decorum and a dangerous low point in India's democratic history, labelling it an assault on the judiciary and the Constitution.
During a court proceeding, a 71-year-old lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore, allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe at CJI Gavai but was stopped by security personnel. The lawyer, unhappy with the CJI's earlier remarks in a case regarding the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho Temple complex, shouted slogans as he was removed from the courtroom.
Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi called the attack not just on the Chief Justice but on the Constitution itself, urging the nation to stand united in solidarity with Gavai. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the incident an assault on the dignity of the judiciary and the spirit of the Constitution, condemning such hatred.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge described the attempted attack as unprecedented and shameful, highlighting that it targeted a sitting judge who rose to the nation’s highest judicial office through merit and integrity. Kharge called the act a reflection of how hate and fanaticism have engulfed society over the past decade and demanded protection for the judiciary's safety, dignity, and independence.
Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained unfazed and urged the court to continue proceedings, stating, "Don't get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me." The advocate was detained and is currently under investigation, with disciplinary action taken by the Bar Council of India.
The Congress emphasised that this incident is a result of a sustained campaign to undermine institutions, intimidate voices of integrity, and erode public faith in the judiciary, fueled by the current government's tolerance of attacks on independent institutions and dissent.
