Vijay also suggested that public discourse should focus on governance and policies rather than personal appearance

Trichy: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday defended his choice of attire, saying criticism over his wearing a coat and suit was misplaced and questioning why such clothing should be associated only with those in positions of power.
Addressing a public gathering in Tiruchirappalli, Vijay responded to remarks about his appearance, stating that there was nothing unusual about him wearing a suit.
“Many people are talking about me wearing a coat. Why? Aren’t we allowed to wear a coat and a suit? Should only those in power and the dominant forces be the ones wearing coats and suits?” he asked.
The Chief Minister said the black-and-white colour combination he often wears carries a symbolic meaning. According to Vijay, the two colours represent the two sides of the human mind and reflect his preference for simplicity rather than flamboyance.
“These two colours reflect the two sides of the human mind and I don’t want to dress in fancy colours,” he said.
Vijay also suggested that public discourse should focus on governance and policies rather than personal appearance. He maintained that clothing should not become a measure of a leader's commitment to the people, adding that every individual has the freedom to choose how they present themselves.
The Chief Minister said his preference for black and white reflects his belief in clarity and straightforwardness in public life. He indicated that the same principles would guide his administration, with an emphasis on transparent decision-making and accountability.
