Chennai: The first Vande Bharat train with sleeper coaches is set to roll out by the end of this month. However, the train is unlikely to achieve the expected speed, according to sources from the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
Sleeper berths have been added to a train originally designed for Vande Bharat chair cars. Modifications have also been made to store more water. These changes have increased the weight of the coaches, and as a result, the train will not be able to reach its expected speed of 130-180 km/h, said senior officials from the Perambur Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The maximum achievable speed is now capped at 130 km/h.
RDSO is currently finalising the procedures required before inspection by the Railway Safety Commissioner. Tests are being conducted by loading the coaches with sandbags to simulate passenger weight. After completing all tests, the train will be certified as fit for travel. All related documentation will be handed over to the Railway Safety Commissioner, who will then conduct a trial run at maximum speed. Only after this process will the train be handed over to Indian Railways.
The sleeper coaches for ICF are being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The first train was handed over on October 4, 2024. Over the past three months, ICF has been completing the procedures to launch the train on the tracks. In 2023, ICF subcontracted BEML to manufacture 10 Vande Bharat trains, each consisting of 16 coaches.
