On 19 February 2025, Wednesday the nation is to celebrate Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, marking the 395th birth anniversary of the great Maratha warrior king. Recognised as one of India’s most legendary rulers, Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to the establishment of the Maratha Empire and his fight for self-rule continue to inspire generations.

Born in 1630 at Shivneri Fort, Shivaji Maharaj defied the Mughal Empire and other foreign powers, laying the foundation for a strong, independent Maratha rule. His military brilliance, strategic foresight, and commitment to good governance made him a ruler ahead of his time. With his innovative guerrilla warfare tactics, naval strength, and fort-building expertise, he not only defended his empire but also expanded its influence.

Celebrations

Across Maharashtra and other parts of India, preparations for grand celebrations are in full swing. Mumbai, Pune, and Kolhapur are set to host massive processions, cultural performances, and historical exhibitions honouring the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj. At Raigad Fort—his capital—special ceremonies will take place, and tributes will be paid at his samadhi (memorial).

Schools and educational institutions will organise lectures, plays, and essay competitions highlighting his governance, military strategies, and contributions to India’s independence movement. Statues of Shivaji Maharaj in public spaces will be adorned with flowers, and public gatherings will echo with slogans celebrating his legacy.

Political leaders and historians are expected to address gatherings, reflecting on how Shivaji Maharaj’s principles of governance, religious tolerance, and people-centric policies remain relevant today. Many also highlight his emphasis on a strong naval force, which laid the foundation for India’s maritime security strategies.

Legacy remains immortal

Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals of Swarajya (self-rule), secular administration, and warrior ethics have left an indelible mark on Indian history. His leadership was defined by inclusivity—he promoted competent individuals irrespective of caste and religion, fostering a progressive administration. His strong sense of justice and people-first policies made him a beloved ruler.

Beyond governance, his military strategies revolutionised warfare in India. His expertise in fortification led to the construction of over 300 forts, including the iconic Raigad, Pratapgad, and Sindhudurg. His legendary naval fleet ensured the Maratha Empire's dominance along the western coastline, countering Portuguese and Mughal threats.

The Maharashtra government, with support from the NDA-led Centre, has announced grand celebrations for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s 395th birth anniversary on February 19. The large-scale event is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen Maratha voter support ahead of the upcoming elections.
