Mahua Moitra criticises Indian government for failing to serve US court summons to Gautam Adani in securities fraud case.

New Delhi/New York: Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra reignited controversy around billionaire Gautam Adani, this time calling out the government for failing to facilitate the service of a US court summons in a high-profile securities fraud case
Taking to X on Tuesday, Moitra shared a letter submitted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stating, “Look at this- @MLJ_GoI NOT served SEC summons to @gautam_adani for past 6 months in violation of Hague Service Convention. What’s the problem- can’t find Bhai or ₹2.324 crores in bribes not enough for action?”
Moitra’s tweet referenced a status report filed by the SEC with a US court, in which the agency reported it was still unable to officially serve legal documents to Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani despite requesting assistance from India’s Ministry of Law & Justice over six months ago.
What’s in the SEC letter?
The SEC informed the court that although it had initiated service under the Hague Service Convention, including sending documents and waiver requests to the Adanis and their legal counsel, no formal service has been completed.
The case, filed in November 2024, alleges that the Adanis violated US securities laws by making false and misleading claims about Adani Green Energy Ltd. during a September 2021 debt offering.
This is the third status update by the SEC, with prior filings in April and June 2025. The agency confirmed it will continue to pursue service through Indian authorities and keep the court updated.
Moitra’s comments add political pressure
Moitra’s sharp remarks not only brought the sealed court document into the public eye but also questioned the Indian government’s lack of action on an international legal matter involving a politically connected businessman.
Her reference to “₹2.324 crores in bribes” echoes earlier allegations she made regarding corporate lobbying and cash-for-favour claims part of a controversy that led to her suspension from Parliament in 2023.
