Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has admitted a petition regarding an alleged attack on a ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest against the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal last August. Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj admitted the petition on Thursday, and the case is expected to be heard again on Friday.
The petitioner claims that on October 1, a group of local Trinamool Congress activists, led by a party councillor from the Tollygunge area, attacked the protesters. According to the petition, the activists physically assaulted the women involved in the demonstration, and when the victims tried to file a complaint at the local police station, their report was refused.

On October 1, various protests and ‘Reclaim the Night’ events were held across Kolkata. One notable rally involved around 40 organisations, including several doctors' associations, marching from College Square to Rabindra Sadan in South Kolkata. Another protest took place in Tollygunge, where the alleged attack occurred.
The petition states that the assault was unprovoked and happened in front of police officers, who reportedly did not intervene and declined to take any complaints from the protesters.
In response, councillor Ratna Sur has denied the allegations, claiming that her supporters were provoked by the protesters’ use of abusive language. She also asserted that some of her associates were injured during the confrontation.
