The rift between the former police officer and party leadership has grown over several months.

The political career of K. Annamalai reached a significant crossroads this week following high-level discussions in New Delhi. The former Tamil Nadu BJP president held talks with national leaders Nitin Nabin and B. L. Santhosh on Tuesday. These meetings occurred amid intense speculation that he is prepared to leave the party to establish a new independent nationalist movement.
Rising tensions and new horizons
Reports indicate that Annamalai has declined various incentives to stay within the party, including a potential seat in the Rajya Sabha or a senior role in the central administration. Instead, he appears focused on a distinct political path for Tamil Nadu. Sources suggest he is also expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah before making a final announcement on whether he will resign or float a new outfit.
The rift between the former police officer and party leadership has grown over several months. Disagreements regarding the central government’s three-language policy in schools and the party’s strategy towards the AIADMK have created significant distance. His absence from recent committee meetings and the rapid expansion of his personal fan welfare group, Annamalai Anbu Koottam, have further fuelled talk of a split.
On the ground, the momentum is visible. Supporters have decorated streets with posters calling for his leadership, timed near his upcoming birthday on June 4. While he has urged observers to wait a few more days for a formal statement, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is already bracing for a shift. This follows a major change in state politics where the TVK party recently broke the long-standing hold of traditional regional powers. For now, the question remains whether the former BJP chief will attempt to carve out his own space in this new era.
