Citing neglect by the national leadership and a diminished organisational standing, the two-time legislator's departure is expected to impact the party's election campaign strategy in the northeastern state.
New Delhi: The Congress party suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections as former state unit president Bhupen Kumar Borah resigned from the party, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Borah, a two-time legislator, reportedly submitted his formal resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. In the correspondence, sources say Borah alleged he was being "ignored" by the national leadership and claimed he was no longer being granted his proper standing within the state’s organisational hierarchy.
The veteran politician served as the head of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from 2021 until 2025. He was succeeded in the role last year by Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
The departure of a former state chief is expected to complicate the party's campaign strategy as it prepares to challenge the ruling coalition in the northeastern state.
