Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar revealed that the government is considering a location in South Bengaluru for the city’s second international airport, aimed at improving connectivity and catering to growing air traffic demands.

Since last month, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been shortlisting sites for Bengaluru’s second airport, with three potential locations under review. However, no final decision has been made so far, according to Deccan Herald.

Earlier in March 2025, the Karnataka government identified three potential sites for the new airport:

Two locations on Kanakapura Road near Kaggalipura and Harohalli in South Bengaluru

One location on Kunigal Road in North Bengaluru

Infrastructure Development and Industries Minister M B Patil confirmed that preliminary work has begun for the airport project. As per regulations, no new international airport can be constructed within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033. The government is planning ahead to ensure that the new airport is operational by that year, given that projects of this scale typically take five to six years to complete.

The proposed South Bengaluru airport is expected to enhance air connectivity, reduce congestion at KIA, and support the city’s growing demand for domestic and international flights.
