Banking services across India will face a series of closures throughout May 2026 due to a combination of religious festivals, state-specific observances, and regular weekend holidays, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar. Customers are likely to experience frequent non-working days at bank branches, particularly in the second half of the month.
The month begins with closures on May 1 (Friday) for Maharashtra Day and Labour Day in several states. This is followed by May 3 (Sunday), when banks across the country will remain closed due to the weekly holiday.
After a brief working period, banking services will again be affected on May 9 (Saturday), when branches will shut nationwide for the second Saturday. In West Bengal, an additional holiday will be observed on the same day for Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti. The closure is followed by May 10 (Sunday), a standard weekly holiday across India.
Mid-month, May 16 (Saturday) will see bank closures in select states on account of Statehood Day, while May 17 (Sunday) will bring another nationwide weekly shutdown.
The disruptions continue on May 23 (Saturday), which marks the fourth Saturday holiday, resulting in a full-day closure of all banks across the country. This is followed by May 24 (Sunday), another routine weekly holiday.
The final stretch of the month includes festival-related closures. On May 26 (Tuesday), banks will remain closed in some states for Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti. This will be followed by Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) on May 27 (Wednesday), when banking services will be suspended in most states. Certain regions may also observe an additional holiday on May 28 (Thursday) in connection with Bakrid festivities.
The month concludes with May 31 (Sunday), marking the final weekly bank holiday of May 2026.
Despite the frequent branch closures, essential banking services such as UPI transactions, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATM withdrawals will continue to function normally throughout the month.
Customers are advised to plan branch visits in advance, especially during consecutive holiday stretches and festival periods, to avoid delays in time-sensitive financial transactions.
