All India United Democratic Front Chief Badruddin Ajmal and Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi have stirred a political controversy by claiming that Parliament may have been constructed on Waqf land. 

Ajmal, who served as a Member of Parliament for 15 years, called for an investigation into the matter while speaking to a television news channel. He reportedly told Times Now, "I was in Parliament for 15 years, and there were rumours that Parliament is built on Waqf land. That’s why I am asking for an investigation into this, and if it's true, then it is very wrong."

Expressing strong disapproval over the Waqf Bill, Ajmal stated that all secular political parties have boycotted the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to review the bill. Ajmal highlighted that five crore people have sent messages to the JPC, urging them to reject the bill, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction.

Ajmal further announced that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind will conduct a survey of Waqf Board lands in Assam to challenge the bill. He reiterated his earlier claim that the new Parliament building is constructed on Waqf land and affirmed that the legal battle over the Waqf Bill will continue.

The remarks were backed by SP's Abu Azmi, who said that MPs should pay rent for residing on bungalows built on Waqf land. 

"It is our ancestors' property. If the land belongs to Waqf and there are evidences, then anyone using it should pay rent to Waqf. That's what we are saying," Azmi said, adding, "An inquiry should take place. If Parliament land belongs to Waqf, then nobody can change this fact."

The comments have sparked sharp reactions, particularly from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized Ajmal's statement, accusing him of trying to spread baseless rumors. "Tomorrow, they can claim your house too. They can claim my house as well. All these people are professional land grabbers," Poonawala remarked, dismissing the claim as a political ploy.

The controversy around the Waqf Bill has escalated, with reports of heated discussions in the JPC meetings held on Monday and Tuesday. Opposition parties boycotted the meeting, alleging mistreatment by BJP members. The opposition MPs have lodged a formal complaint with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Opposition leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and Imran Masood from Congress, A. Raja of DMK, Arvind Sawant from Shiv Sena (UBT), Asaduddin Owaisi from AIMIM, Mohibullah from Samajwadi Party, and Sanjay Singh from AAP, have accused the committee of not following proper rules and procedures in its deliberations.
