Guwahati: Assamese actress Sumi Borah and her husband, Tarkik Borah, who have been implicated in a massive online trading scam, turned themselves in to the police on Thursday. The couple surrendered in Dibrugarh, where they were immediately arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police, which was established to investigate the fraud.

Taking to X, the DGP of Assam Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh wrote, “The game is up for them. Compliments to the Team STF.”

The couple had been on the run since the scam came to light last week, which involved a staggering Rs 2,200 crore. It was discovered that Sumi Borah was closely associated with Bishal Phukan, the main figure behind the scheme.

On Wednesday night, Sumi Borah posted a video on social media stating that she had not fled but had been in hiding due to negative publicity against her. She claimed that false information had been spread and that her family had suffered because of it. In the video, she announced her intention to surrender to the authorities.

Both Phukan and Borah are from Dibrugarh, Assam. Phukan used Borah's connections in the Assamese film industry to attract clients for his company. Borah was also involved in convincing influential people to invest in Phukan's online trading scheme, promising high returns.

Sumi Borah and Tarkik Borah were married last year in a lavish destination wedding in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The wedding was attended by many from the Assamese film industry, with costs covered by Bishal Phukan, who reportedly spent around Rs 5 crore on the event.

Following Bishal Phukan’s arrest, Sumi Borah came under police scrutiny. Authorities visited her apartment in the Pathar Quarry area of Guwahati but found that she and her husband were not there. Despite searching the entire apartment complex, the couple was not located until their surrender. “We found Sumi Borah’s luxury car in the basement of the apartment building. However, the couple fled before the investigation team reached there,” a police official had earlier said.
