Guwahati: Swapnanil Das, one of the suspects in the multi-crore online trading scam, has foreign bank accounts where he deposited massive sums of money obtained through fraudulent activities in Assam, police sources revealed on Saturday.
On the condition of anonymity, a senior police officer said, “We have been interrogating the prime accused Swapnanil Das for the last few days in our custody. He might have bank accounts in Malaysia, Dubai and the USA. In the preliminary investigations, we have found information about the accused depositing money abroad. However, the investigation is underway and we are looking to fetch more details by interrogating him.”
Das, who was arrested from his home in Guwahati three days ago, was found to be living a lavish lifestyle. The police have seized several luxury cars from his garage. Das frequently travelled abroad, and his social media profiles feature numerous photos from destinations such as the Maldives, Dubai, and other countries.
According to a police officer, Das operated a high-end office in the city for his online trading business, which rivals the sophistication of major corporate offices.
The police have identified at least two bank accounts in Dubai linked to Das. It appears that the embezzled funds were deposited in various overseas accounts. Rs 79 lakh was also discovered in the bank account of Das’s mother.
Investigators are working to trace how the money was transferred to these international accounts. Das has been remanded to police custody for an additional three days, following an initial two-day custody period ordered by the court.
In related news, Bishal Phukan, another key suspect in the scam, was arrested in Dibrugarh. So far, authorities have taken 39 individuals into custody in connection with the Rs 2,200 crore online trading fraud that has shocked the state.
