Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement, with the number of people affected by the deluge falling to around 62,000 and the number of affected districts dropping to five, according to an official bulletin shared on Saturday.

The flood death toll remained at 104, with no new fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

According to the latest ASDMA bulletin, floods continued to affect 16 revenue circles and 235 villages across Golaghat, Hojai, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Jorhat.

A total of 62,443 people remained affected. Nagaon reported the highest number at 33,332, followed by Golaghat with 12,641 and Jorhat with 8,523.

The situation has improved from Friday, when seven districts and more than 78,000 people were affected by the floods.

Relief operations continue

Authorities were running 28 relief camps, where more than 4,800 displaced people were taking shelter. Nine relief distribution centres were also operational to provide essential supplies.

The floods have affected 4,954.43 hectares of cropland, while more than 21,000 animals have also been impacted. These include over 10,000 large animals and more than 3,500 poultry.

The ASDMA bulletin also reported damage to infrastructure, including houses, cattle sheds, fisheries and health centres in the affected areas.

While the overall flood situation has eased, relief and rehabilitation efforts continue in the remaining affected districts.

MLA Akhil Gogoi demands more flood aid

Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi held an eight-hour hunger strike on Saturday, seeking Rs 10 lakh in compensation for flood-hit families and a CBI probe into the causes of the devastating floods.

He also sought special packages for severely affected areas, claiming that roads and bridges in Sivasagar and neighbouring constituencies had suffered extensive damage.

The flood crisis also featured in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address. Speaking from the Red Fort, Modi assured families affected by floods and landslides across the country that the government stands with them and understands their suffering.
