With the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 drawing closer, political activity in the state has intensified. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially released its first list of 17 candidates for the upcoming polls, signalling its strategy to expand its footprint in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.

Among the names in the list is Dulu Ahmed, the party’s state senior vice-president, who will contest from the Chamaria constituency.

In parallel, the National People's Party (NPP) has also announced candidates for three constituencies, including AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, who had switched sides recently. He will contest again from his stronghold, Mankachar. The NPP has also fielded Daniel Langthasa from Haflong and Ganseng B Sangma from Boko-Chaygaon.

The TMC candidate list features a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces across constituencies. Key nominees include Udangsri Narzary (Kokrajhar), Mominur Islam (Bilasipara), Kaushik Ranjan Das (Abhayapuri), Kalyani Kalita (Bajali), Rajan Chouhan (Goreswar), Hare Krishna Deka (Mangaldai), Faziur Rahman Laskar (Katigorah) and Shahajahan Laskar (Sonai), among others.

The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling for April 9, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4.
