In a bizarre twist, BJP workers attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Asansol ended up as victims, with around 450 mobile phones reportedly stolen, triggering outrage and irony-filled political attacks.

Asansol: A major controversy has erupted after nearly 450 mobile phones were allegedly stolen during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at the Polo Ground in Asansol on Thursday.
The incident has sparked outrage among BJP workers and supporters, who staged a late-night protest outside the Hirapur police station, accusing the police of refusing to register theft complaints. Watch the viral video below:
According to BJP workers, several miscreants took advantage of the massive crowd and stole not just mobile phones, but also wallets and gold chains.
They claim that at least 10 suspected thieves were caught red-handed and handed over to police, yet no strict action was taken.
Adding fuel to the fire, protesters alleged that police initially refused to file FIRs and instead pressured victims to report the incidents as “lost” phones rather than theft cases.
Police, however, maintained that multiple complaints have been received, some suspects detained, and several stolen phones already recovered. An investigation is currently underway.
The controversy quickly turned political. BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul reached the police station to back the protesters, questioning the law and order situation during a high-profile event attended by the Prime Minister.
On the other hand, Trinamool Congress leader Moloy Ghatak mocked the incident, saying the scale of theft reflects “who attended the rally,” escalating the political slugfest.
Victims narrated their ordeal, claiming police apathy. One attendee said he was initially turned away when trying to file a complaint and had to return with documents before his FIR was finally registered, yet his phone remains missing.
The incident has now raised serious concerns over security arrangements at one of the country’s most high-profile political gatherings.
