New Delhi: Amaravati has officially been declared the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh after the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026 received presidential assent and was published in the Gazette on Tuesday.

Announcing the development, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu made it clear: “The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati.”

What has changed?

The new amendment formally updates the earlier Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 by inserting a clear provision: “Amaravati shall be the new capital.”

This settles years of uncertainty over the state’s capital after the bifurcation that created Telangana. As per the 2014 law, Hyderabad served as a temporary joint capital for both states for up to 10 years, after which Andhra Pradesh needed its own permanent capital.

Now, that decision is final, Amaravati will be the single administrative hub.

Reacting to the development, Naidu expressed gratitude and called it a major milestone for the state.

“On behalf of my people of Andhra Pradesh, I express profound gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu Ji for her gracious assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of our capital. I thank the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji for his commitment to our state and his guidance, all MPs who supported the Bill, our state leaders, and every citizen who stood with us,” he said.

“This is a victory for my people of Andhra Pradesh, especially my farmers of Amaravati,” he added.

The path to this announcement moved quickly in recent weeks:

March 28: Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution backing Amaravati as the sole capital

April 1: Lok Sabha cleared the Bill

April 2: Rajya Sabha passed it, though YSR Congress Party MPs staged a walkout

Now: Presidential assent makes it law.
