Madurai: The Alanganallur Jallikattu, one of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated bull-taming events, began today at the Keezhakkarai Kalaignar Centenary Climbing Stadium near Alanganallur, Madurai.

Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration of Tamil Nadu, P Moorthy inaugurated the festival at 7 AM, with thousands of spectators gathering to witness the traditional spectacle.

This year’s event features 1000 bulls and 650 registered participants, with special security arrangements in place. Veterinary teams and medical personnel are on standby to ensure safety for both bullfighters and animals. Winners will receive prizes, including cycles, silver coins, and other rewards.

The event is being held as part of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s 72nd birthday celebrations, with Minister Moorthy overseeing various welfare programs benefiting over 14,000 people. "Various programs have been held since March 1 to mark the Chief Minister’s birthday, and Jallikattu is a key part of these celebrations," Minister Moorthy stated.

A large number of attendees, including DMK members, district secretaries, local government representatives, and Jallikattu enthusiasts, have gathered for the festival. Special seating arrangements have been made for the public to watch the event free of charge. Additionally, special bus services from Madurai to the Jallikattu arena have been arranged to accommodate visitors.
