New Delhi: Former CM Atishi Marlena selected as Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly at MLAs' meeting, informed AAP on Sunday.
During the assembly polls, AAP won 22 seats, Atishi's Kalkaji constituency being one of them. The BJP was well clear of the majority mark in the 70-seat assembly with 48 seats.
"A legislative party meeting of AAP MLAs was called. Legislative party leader was elected. Sandeep Pathak was appointed as observer, in his absence, the election process was completed. With a consensus, Atishi was elected as legislative party leader. The people has given a mandate to AAP to sit in Opposition. In the Delhi Assembly, Atishi will be the Leader of Opposition... AAP will ensure BJP fulfils its promises made during the elections, Atishi has the responsibility to protect the good work done by the party during our rule," AAP leader Gopal Rai said in a press meet.
Meanwhile, the first session of the eighth legislative assembly of Delhi will begin on Monday with newly elected members taking oath and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta moving a motion for BJP MLA Vijender Gupta to be chosen as the Speaker of the House.
The three-day session will see the election of the House speaker and deputy speaker as well as the tabling of the 14 pending CAG reports on the performance of the previous AAP government.
The second day of the session on February 25 will be devoted to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena's address to the House and the tabling of the 14 CAG reports. It will be followed by a discussion on the LG's address.
The discussion on the motion of thanks will continue on the third day -- February 27. The election of deputy speaker will be held the same day, the bulletin said.
The Assembly secretariat on Friday notified an order of the LG, appointing BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely as the pro-tem speaker.
