Tumakuru: Laboratory findings have confirmed that the recent deaths of 44 peacocks in the district were caused by the H5N1 bird flu, officials said on Friday.

The first instance was reported on April 16. Over the following week, a total of 44 peacocks were found dead under unexplained circumstances in Tumakuru taluk, according to officials.

Forest authorities said the deaths were identified during a detailed combing operation. The birds were discovered in agricultural fields across Kesaramadu, Hirehalli and Gulur gram panchayats.

Lab confirmation of cause

Officials from the forest department stated that samples collected from the carcasses were sent to the ICAR–National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. The institute confirmed that the deaths were due to the H5N1 virus.

No new cases since April 23

Authorities noted that no additional peacock deaths have been reported from any part of Tumakuru taluk since April 23.

“Lab reports have confirmed the deaths were due to H5N1. The forest department is working in coordination with the Health and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services departments to ensure the infection is contained,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Kumar Pushkar told.

Containment measures in place

Health department officials said that all required steps have been taken to prevent further spread of the infection. A containment zone covering a 10-kilometre radius around the affected areas has been declared.

All poultry farms within this zone have been informed and sensitised in line with established protocols, officials added.

Surveillance and preparedness

Healthcare facilities across the district have been directed to continue monitoring cases of ILI and SARI. Authorities have also ensured that sufficient stocks of PPE, triple-layer medical masks, oseltamivir, viral transport medium and throat swab kits are maintained, according to health officials.
