Kozhikode: A meeting unfolded in Kerala’s literary city as the anniversary celebration of 'Hridhyam' group, a WhatsApp community dedicated to reading for the visually impaired, echoed deeply among its members.
This marked the first ever gathering of the association since its formation five years ago. Around 150 participants, including both readers and listeners from various districts, came together for this special occasion. Many were able to put names to the familiar voices they have relied upon over time.
Akshara, a researcher at Kerala University, while speaking at the meeting, likened the readers to "our Mammootty and Mohanlal." Other attendees also shared moving experiences. The event was a testament to overcoming barriers, with members now spanning diverse professions such as teachers, researchers, and officials.
The brainchild behind this initiative is K Zafar Ali, visually-impaired himself and an officer at Indian Overseas Bank in Bengaluru. Starting with just five readers and ten listeners on Reading Day 2019, the group has now grown to include 100 readers and 400 listeners across five different groups. These groups cater not only to literature and history enthusiasts but also to students at various educational levels. There are groups called 'Business' for newspapers and periodicals, 'Kalalayam' for college students, 'Vidyalayam' for school students and 'Kids' for little kids.

Beyond just fostering a love for reading, the group has become crucial in transforming lives. It has provided training for competitive exams like the PSC, resulting in success stories such as Maheen's appointment as clerk in a medical college and Akshay's role as a village field assistant.
The gathering was inaugurated by Asha Latha, a member of the group and a prominent social media influencer. Expressing his vision for the future, K Zafar Ali emphasised the association's goal to reach out to more visually impaired persons, making a difference through the power of shared voices.
