Guwahati (Assam): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam Police, has arrested two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) in connection with the sudden demise of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore.

The singer passed away on September 19 in Singapore, a day before he was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival. The arrested PSOs, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, had been associated with Garg for a long time.

SIT Chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta told ANI, “Yes both arrested by the SIT/CID today. The team have brought the arrested persons to the CJM (Chief Judicial Magistrate) court for production.”

Financial irregularities unearthed

Earlier, the SIT/CID had discovered a significant financial transaction amounting to over Rs 1 crore in the bank accounts of the two PSOs.

So far, the SIT has arrested the main event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, and Garg’s cousin, suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg, in connection with the case.

The Assam government on Wednesday suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg following his arrest by the SIT/CID.

Wife appeals for truth, not politics

Amid the ongoing probe, Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia, has urged people not to politicise her husband’s death and requested eyewitnesses to come forward with information.

Speaking to the media, Garima said, “I am still keeping the faith, 5 to 6 people have been arrested in this case, but they haven't spoken the truth yet. I am waiting very patiently. People are cooperating with the investigation team and the judicial system. I hope the truth comes out fast.”

“21 days have passed since Zubeen's death. Those who were the eyewitnesses should come out. We have lost our icon, our heartbeat. Things should not be politicised in this matter,” she added.

Poisoning allegation surfaces

Earlier reports had suggested that Garg died while scuba diving in Singapore. However, his bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami has alleged that the singer was poisoned, claiming that a “conspiracy” was hatched “to portray his death as accidental,” according to the ‘Detailed Grounds of Arrest’ (remand note).
