Thiruvananthapuram: More details have emerged in connection with the mass murder in Venjarammoodu on Monday. According to accused Affan’s statement before Venjaramoodu police, the murders were driven by financial liabilities. After committing the murders, Affan consumed poison and was subsequently admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for treatment. His official statement was recorded by the police in strict secrecy on Tuesday. In this statement, Affan reportedly disclosed all details related to the murders.

Affan said that his mother frequently borrowed money to cover household expenses, leading to a total debt of approximately ₹65 lakh. The loans were taken from around 12 different people over time. Each time money was borrowed from one person, it was repaid using another loan, creating a cycle of debt.

At one point, the family was unable to repay the borrowed money, and when creditors started demanding repayment, they considered mass suicide. Affan, along with his mother and brother, planned to end their lives together. However, he feared that the suicide attempt might not succeed for everyone. This led him to conclude that he should take responsibility for killing them himself. Initially, he planned to kill only his mother and brother.

Even as the family struggled with a severe financial crisis, Affan said that his father’s brother, his wife, and his grandmother frequently interfered in their matters. Instead of helping them clear their debts, they constantly scolded and blamed Affan and his mother. This created resentment in Affan toward them, ultimately leading him to decide to kill them as well. He also admitted that his decision to kill Farsana was driven by the thought, "If I cannot live in this world, she too should not."

According to Affan's statement, his first target on the day of the incident was his mother. Around 11 a.m., he tried to strangle her with a shawl. When she lost consciousness, he assumed she was dead and locked her inside a room before leaving the house to arrange weapons for the remaining murders.

He then visited a financial institution in Venjaramoodu, where he borrowed ₹1,500. With this money, he bought a heavy hammer from a nearby shop. He also purchased a bag and rat poison from other stores before returning home. Upon reaching home, he saw that his mother had regained consciousness and was looking at him. Without hesitation, he struck her on the head with the hammer, assuming she was dead.

After this, he went to his grandmother’s house in Pangode and killed her with the same hammer. He then took her gold necklace and returned to Venjaramoodu. At the financial institution, he pawned the gold necklace and received ₹74,500 in return. He transferred ₹40,000 of this amount online to one of his creditors.

Following this, he traveled to S.N. Puram, where he killed his father’s brother and his wife. After these murders, he went to a bar in Venjaramoodu, drank alcohol, and purchased another bottle.

Later, he called his girlfriend, Farsana, and picked her up on his bike, taking her home. Before this, however, he had sent his brother Afsan to Venjaramoodu to buy ‘Kuzhimanthi’ (a type of dish) to ensure he wasn’t home. Once inside the house, Affan killed Farsana by striking her on the head.

Afterward, he consumed poison. Meanwhile, his brother Afsan returned home with the food, at which point Affan killed him as well. He then went to the Venjaramoodu police station and surrendered.

Although Affan’s statement was recorded in strict secrecy on Tuesday, the police were investigating whether there were additional reasons that led him to commit the crime. This caused a delay in revealing the details of his statement. However, the police confirmed that the details from Affan’s confession matched the evidence they had gathered in the investigation.
