Konni (Kerala): The six individuals detained in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl by her classmates in Pathanamthitta have been temporarily released by the police. The decision follows reported inconsistencies between the victim's statement and the circumstantial evidence gathered so far. However, the police have clarified that an exhaustive investigation into the complaint is ongoing.

The distressing allegations surfaced during a routine counselling session at the girl's school. Following this, the police registered two cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on her initial statement.

Six persons, including four minors, were subsequently taken into custody. They were temporarily released after investigators reportedly encountered contradictions in the girl's narrative and found the current evidence insufficient to justify formal arrests.

Although the girl underwent a medical examination, police sources indicate that the findings do not yet provide enough grounds to proceed with detentions. Consequently, authorities have decided to broaden their investigation and will initiate further legal action as more evidence comes to light.

Child Rights Commission initiates inquiry

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has intervened in the matter, registering a suo motu case following reports that a 13-year-old schoolgirl was sexually assaulted by her peers in Pathanamthitta.

Taking cognisance of the incident based on media coverage, Commission Chairman K V Manoj Kumar initiated the proceedings. The child rights panel announced it would formally instruct the relevant administrative and police officials to hand over a comprehensive report on the matter, affirming that the statutory body will strictly oversee the trajectory of the ongoing police probe.
