Mumbai: A 33-year-old man from Pune has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his twin daughters while travelling to his native village in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, police confirmed.

The tragic incident is believed to have occurred on October 21, though the accused, Rahul Sheshrao Chavan, surrendered to authorities at Andhera Police Station in Buldhana on Saturday morning.

Chavan, employed at a private firm in Pune, had planned to celebrate Diwali with his wife and daughters, Pranali and Pratiksha, in Washim district. However, a domestic dispute reportedly led to his wife returning to her parents’ home in Pune, leaving Chavan deeply distressed, according to police sources.

On Tuesday, while en route to Washim, Chavan allegedly took the girls to a secluded spot near Ancherwadi in Buldhana and fatally slit their throats. He is said to have contemplated suicide following the act but ultimately chose to surrender.

Police escorted Chavan to the crime scene, where the bodies of the two girls were recovered. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
