Kochi: Following the recent arrest of the kingpin in an organ trafficking case linked to Iran, shocking details have emerged revealing the exorbitant prices charged by agents from organ recipients.

Hospitals in Iran charge only Rs. 10 lakhs for each surgery, while organ donors receive a meagre sum of 6 to 8 lakhs. However, it's the middlemen who truly profit from such organ trades, earning substantial sums nearing Rs. 30 lakhs per transaction.

Take, for example, the recently apprehended gang, which had conducted 20 organ trades in Iran alone and received Rs 6 crores. The gang members, including Madhu, Sabith, Sajith, and Prathapan, each received a significant sum in every trade.

Authorities have received intelligence indicating the presence of similar groups operating across the country, with suspicions mounting regarding Madhu and his associates' connections to such networks. More details could be unveiled only after questioning Madhu.

Meanwhile, the victims are primarily from rural areas, predominantly from states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The perpetrators disclosed that organ recipients hailed from affluent backgrounds across various states, including Jammu Kashmir and Delhi, with none being Malayalis.

Moreover, the police are said to have received information that some private hospitals helped the accused find organ donors. The probe team is looking into hospitals in Delhi, Bengaluru and Vijayawada for potential involvement in this illicit trade. Meanwhile, the police officials are also probing whether any hospital in Kerala is involved with the mafia.

Those implicated in the case will face charges for illegal organ trading abroad. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that donors who underwent surgery in Iran have since returned home. Notably, a Malayali man named Shameer underwent kidney donation surgery in Iran in May.
