Mumbai: A 27-year-old daily-wage labourer has been arrested within 12 hours for the fatal stabbing of a college professor following a minor altercation at Mumbai’s Malad railway station.

The incident took place on Saturday evening at platform number 1 of Malad railway station when a dispute broke out between the victim, Alok Kumar Singh, a professor at NM College, and the accused while they were alighting from a crowded local train.

According to officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP), the argument escalated suddenly, leading to a violent attack.

Police said the accused, Omkar Eknath Shinde, stabbed Singh in the stomach using a sharp weapon before fleeing the scene. Singh collapsed on the platform and was found lying in a pool of blood.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The Borivali GRP traced and arrested Shinde from the Kurar area of Mumbai’s western suburbs within 12 hours of the crime. Investigators used CCTV footage from the station and surrounding areas to identify and track the accused.

Shinde has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is ongoing.

Videos circulating on social media show the accused fleeing the station immediately after the stabbing. The footage reportedly captures the victim collapsing on the platform moments after the attack.

Police have confirmed that CCTV evidence played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the accused. The incident has raised concerns over passenger safety in Mumbai’s crowded local train network, where minor disputes can quickly escalate into serious violence. Authorities have reiterated the need for vigilance and quick response at busy railway stations.
