Mumbai: A 25-year-old man from Mumbai has been arrested after allegedly subjecting his wife to prolonged physical and mental abuse, forcing her into a painful "rooster" position for several hours before later tracking her down and attacking her when she sought safety at her parents' home, police said.

The accused, identified as Arbaaz Syed, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by his wife. Investigators said the alleged abuse stemmed from a domestic dispute that escalated into a series of violent incidents.

According to police, Syed allegedly confined his wife inside their home after an argument and assaulted her repeatedly. During the ordeal, he is accused of threatening her with a sword and warning that he would disfigure her by throwing acid on her face.

Authorities said the woman was also allegedly forced to remain in a "rooster" position, a physically demanding punishment posture, for nearly four hours.

Woman escapes to parents' home

Fearing further violence, the woman managed to leave the residence and sought refuge with her parents.

However, police said the accused later traced her whereabouts and arrived at the family home. According to NDTV, he allegedly created a disturbance outside the residence before another confrontation unfolded.

During the altercation, Syed allegedly attacked his wife with a knife, prompting family members to immediately contact the police.

Officers responded to the scene and arrested the accused shortly afterwards.

Accused found to have multiple criminal cases

As the investigation progressed, police discovered that Syed was a history-sheeter with an extensive criminal record.

Authorities said he has been named in 19 criminal cases registered across different police stations. The cases reportedly involve several serious offences.

Police have registered a fresh case against the accused based on the victim's complaint and invoked multiple relevant legal provisions.

Investigation underway

Officials said legal proceedings have been initiated and efforts are being made to secure judicial custody for the accused.

The victim is receiving support from her family while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and attack.
