New Delhi: In response to the murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has announced a nationwide suspension of elective services in hospitals on August 12 to show solidarity with the residents of RG Kar Medical College.

The doctors expressed their outrage through a social media post shared on X.

"We stand with our beaten, manhandled, deeply hurt colleagues of R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata," the post said.

They also demanded urgent action and requested collective support from other doctors.

" We urge authorities to not make it political and color it bad- It’s humanity which is at stake here. Request everyone to collectively support and help doctors- they’re wounded from within," it said.

The doctor was allegedly raped before her death, leading to widespread outrage and demands for justice within the medical community.

The semi-nude body of a woman postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor was found inside the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in Kolkata on Friday. The deceased, a second-year student of the chest medicine department, was on duty on Thursday night. The body bore injury marks.

The initial autopsy of the post-graduate trainee doctor indicated that she was murdered after being sexually assaulted, police said. It also ruled out suicide, they said, adding that a case has now been registered at the Tala Police Station.

According to the four-page report, there was bleeding from the woman's private parts, with injury marks in other parts of the body. Two lady witnesses and the woman's mother were present during the autopsy, which was conducted on-camera.

Earlier, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal asserted the force will make sure the accused in the sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor gets "the highest punishment” if he is found guilty.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday asserted that her government will seek death penalty for the accused in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor. Banerjee also said she has asked officials to ensure that the case be tried in a fast track court.
