Kochi: A former student of the prestigious Maharaja's College in Kochi has been arrested for allegedly attempting to steal beds from the college hostel, with security personnel intercepting him before the furniture could be taken away.

The accused has been identified as Ansten, 23, of Chakkuveettil House in Angamaly, who graduated from the college in 2024. According to police, he allegedly tried to transport eight hostel beds worth around Rs 20,000 in a goods autorickshaw. Three of the beds were intact, while the remaining five had been dismantled.

Security staff grew suspicious

The incident came to light in the early hours of Sunday when a security guard noticed the beds being loaded onto the vehicle outside the hostel and stopped Ansten for questioning.

He reportedly told the security guard that the beds were infested with bedbugs and were being taken to Angamaly for chemical treatment. However, he failed to give a satisfactory answer when asked who had authorised their removal.

Growing suspicious, the security guard alerted the hostel authorities, who subsequently lodged a complaint with the police.

Beds were allegedly bound for Angamaly

Police said their investigation found that the beds were allegedly being transported to Angamaly. Officers also said Ansten had booked the goods autorickshaw through an online application to move the furniture.
