Violence and vandalism were reported in parts of West Bengal on Monday as counting of votes for the Assembly elections progressed, with clashes breaking out between supporters of rival parties in several districts.

In Asansol, unrest was reported at the Engineering College counting centre after a scuffle between polling agents escalated, leading to damage of chairs and vehicles. Security personnel used a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Police said a political party camp was vandalised and efforts were underway to identify those involved. “A political party camp was vandalised. The people responsible for the vandalism are being identified,” said a police official.

Separate incidents of vandalism were also reported in Barabani and Jamuria areas of Asansol, where TMC offices were allegedly targeted.

In Cooch Behar’s Dinhata area, clashes broke out between BJP and TMC workers, with reports of stone-pelting and use of sticks during the confrontation. Security forces were deployed to restore order.

The incidents came amid tense counting trends showing the BJP ahead in several seats, signalling a possible political shift, while the TMC alleged irregularities in the process.
