Middle East conflict hits Morbi ceramic hub; propane shortage forces factory shutdowns
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted propane supplies to Gujarat’s Morbi, one of the world’s largest ceramic manufacturing hubs.
Morbi : The ceramic industry in Morbi, widely regarded as one of India’s largest ceramic manufacturing hubs, is facing severe losses as the ongoing conflict in Middle East disrupts the supply of propane, a key fuel used in industrial kilns.
Industry stakeholders say propane shortages have forced several ceramic units to shut down temporarily, while many others are operating at reduced capacity due to limited fuel availability. As a result, production across the cluster has declined sharply.
Morbi houses one of the world’s largest ceramic production clusters, supplying tiles and sanitaryware to both domestic and international markets. The current disruption has therefore raised concerns not only for local manufacturers but also for supply chains linked to the industry.
Factory owners warn that if the shortage of propane continues, more units may be forced to suspend operations, potentially bringing the industry to a near standstill.
The crisis has also put the livelihoods of thousands of workers at risk. While some factory owners say they can provide limited compensation to employees for a short period, they caution that a prolonged disruption could make it difficult to sustain wages and employment.
