Union Budget 2026: Kolhapur’s iconic chappal artisans seek support to revive traditional industry
As the Union Budget approaches, artisans in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur are urging the government to support the struggling Kolhapuri chappal industry
Kolhapur (Maharashtra): When you think of Kolhapur, the very first thing that pops into your mind is its famous leather chappals. Millions of people still adore the handmade Kolhapuri chappal, which was once worn by royalty and continues to be a key representation of the town's cultural and economic identity.
The chappal industry provides a source of income for thousands of families in Kolhapur. For many generations, the craft has been supported by a vast ecosystem made up of traditional artisans, suppliers of raw materials, and traders. Kolhapuri chappals have long been in demand in both Indian and foreign markets due to their unique design and reputation for durability.
However, in recent years, the sector has faced increasing difficulties. Many small-scale manufacturers have been forced to close their doors due to financial difficulties brought on by rising raw material prices, increased production costs, and fierce competition from mass-produced, less expensive footwear.
Stakeholders are demanding focused government action as the Union Budget draws near. In order to combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, branding and marketing strategies, artisans and traders are looking for tax breaks, easier access to credit and the creation of training facilities.
Following a controversy surrounding the Italian luxury brand Prada's menswear collection, which included footwear inspired by Kolhapuri designs, renewed optimism surfaced last year. Following this, Prada and two Indian government agencies with headquarters in Maharashtra and Karnataka signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the goal of advancing the leather sector and conserving Kolhapuri chappal culture.
Kolhapur's artisans are optimistic about the development because they think the partnership could lead to increased market access and worldwide recognition. However, they emphasise that the advantages must be directly distributed to grassroots producers, such as through more accessible loans, equitable pricing and assistance for small workshops.
Kolhapur's chappal makers are pleading with the government to announce inclusive financial measures and policy support in order to help revitalise the traditional craft and allow small producers to compete in an increasingly globalised footwear market, as the Union Budget is just a few days away.
