Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, popularly known as the Glass City of India, is looking to the upcoming Union Budget for relief from a range of long-standing challenges confronting its glass manufacturing sector.

As India’s largest hub for glass products, Firozabad is home to hundreds of manufacturing units, many located in densely populated and congested neighbourhoods. Industry representatives warn that safety risks are increasing, while relocation or expansion of units remains difficult due to regulatory hurdles and the absence of structured government support.

One of the most pressing concerns is the inadequate and erratic supply of natural gas, a critical input for glass production. Manufacturers say fluctuating availability and rising gas prices have forced several units to scale back operations, affecting production levels and employment across the sector.

Bangle manufacturers, a cornerstone of Firozabad’s glass economy, say surging input costs are threatening the survival of factories that employ hundreds of workers. They are urging the Centre to announce measures in the Budget to rein in inflation and reduce raw material costs in order to protect the traditional bangle industry and its allied trades.

Delayed payments are another major challenge. Industry stakeholders claim manufacturers often wait six months to over a year to receive payments for supplied goods, leading to severe cash flow constraints. They are calling for a stronger legal mechanism to ensure timely payments and ease financial stress on small and medium enterprises.

With the livelihoods of thousands of craftsmen, traders and their families tied to the glass industry, stakeholders hope the Union Budget will provide tangible relief through increased gas allocation, tax concessions and policy support to revive Firozabad’s struggling glass sector.
