Tapovan's green sanctuary under threat: Nashik faces environmental crisis ahead of Kumbh Mela
Over 1,500 trees in Tapovan, Nashik face removal for Kumbh Mela housing, sparking public protests and environmental concerns.
Tapovan, one of the last remaining green lungs of Nashik city, became the focal point of a growing environmental movement this weekend as activists and residents united to oppose the proposed felling of trees for the upcoming Kumbh Mela preparations.
Earlier this month, authorities marked more than 1,500 trees spread across a 1,200-acre expanse for possible removal to make way for Sadhugram, a temporary township planned to accommodate thousands of seers and religious leaders visiting the city during the Kumbh Mela scheduled for October–November 2026.
The decision triggered widespread concern among environmentalists, who warn that the large-scale clearing of Tapovan’s greenery would irreversibly damage the ecological balance of the area. In response, hundreds of nature lovers, students, and local citizens gathered at the site over the weekend, forming a human chain and holding placards to voice their dissent.
Noted actor Sayaji Shinde also joined the protesters, lending star power to the movement and urging authorities to protect Tapovan’s natural heritage.
Following mounting pressure, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has clarified that only trees less than 10 years old will be cut, and that too only if necessary. However, activists remain sceptical, insisting that the administration must explore alternative locations or eco-friendly designs that safeguard the region’s biodiversity.
As the countdown to the 2026 Kumbh Mela continues, the battle over Tapovan has emerged as a defining clash between development and environmental conservation—one that Nashik’s citizens say they are determined to fight.
