TN Assembly elections 2026: MK Stalin announces ₹5,000 pre-poll cash boost for 1.31 crore women
Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a one-time ₹5,000 cash transfer for over 1.31 crore women under the Kalaignar Women’s Entitlement Scheme.
Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a significant pre-election financial outreach aimed at female voters ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The initiative will directly credit ₹5,000 into the bank accounts of 1.31 crore Kalaignar Women's Entitlement Scheme beneficiaries.
Launched in 2023, the programme recognises the importance of women heads of households for both family welfare and financial stability by giving them ₹1,000 a month. A ₹2,000 special summer assistance component, ₹1,000 for February, and advance payments for March and April are all included in the most recent one-time enhanced transfer. According to the government, the action is intended to assist families in managing growing household expenses, healthcare demands, educational costs, and seasonal expenditures.
Stalin claimed in a video message that the disbursement was a firm response to attempts to stall the plan during the election period. Additionally, he promised that the monthly assistance would be doubled to ₹2,000 under what he called the "Dravidian Model 2.0" if the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) were to regain power.
The decision has been hailed by DMK supporters as a timely relief during a period when inflation is placing pressure on household budgets.
However, the rollout has come under close watch in Coimbatore, considered a traditional stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. While several women in the region acknowledged that the scheme has provided meaningful financial support, some said they were yet to receive the additional amount announced this month.
Others raised concerns about the ₹2.5 lakh annual income eligibility cap, urging the government to revise it upward, while a few expressed scepticism over whether the funds would consistently reach beneficiaries.
The opposition has strongly criticised the announcement, accusing Stalin, who is also the DMK president, of releasing funds out of fear of defeat in the upcoming elections. The BJP has alleged that the state government has failed to fulfil several of its earlier election promises and claimed that the enhanced welfare payout is an attempt to mask those shortcomings ahead of the polls.
In response, the DMK has hit back at the BJP, saying any attempt to freeze welfare entitlements for three months in the name of elections would be unacceptable and detrimental to women beneficiaries.
Women voters form a crucial electoral bloc in Tamil Nadu, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas. By transferring cash directly to women, the DMK hopes to counter anti-incumbency sentiment and convert welfare outreach into electoral support.
For the ruling party, Coimbatore remains a key test case. As the implementation of the enhanced payout continues, the scheme’s reach and its real impact on household finances could influence both its social outcomes and the political dynamics leading up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
