The return of rain and snowfall across the Kashmir valley as Chillai Kalan begins has eased dry cold conditions in Srinagar

Fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of Kashmir and light rainfall in Srinagar have brought relief to residents after the valley witnessed a prolonged spell of dry weather.
People in Srinagar say that although snowfall in the city is still eagerly awaited, the brief rainfall over the weekend has helped ease the biting dry cold. The extended dry spell had led to an increase in seasonal illnesses such as coughs and colds, making the recent change in weather especially welcome.
The rain in Srinagar and snowfall across parts of the Kashmir valley have coincided with the onset of Chillai Kalan, the 40-day period marking the harshest phase of winter in the region, which began on December 21.
Locals are hopeful that the current weather conditions will pave the way for heavier snowfall in the coming days, particularly in Srinagar and nearby areas. Snowfall during Chillai Kalan is considered crucial for winter tourism, as visitors flock to Kashmir to experience the valley transformed into a snow-covered landscape.
Many residents see the rain and snowfall at the start of Chillai Kalan as a positive sign and a precursor to an active winter season ahead.
The Chillai Kalan period will conclude on January 30, after which winter conditions are expected to gradually moderate.
